Description: This one is actually available, we're just doing a little more research right now!
A very enigmatic solid gold brooch showing some outrageously good gold smith skills! It fits like a glove into its box from the retailer Thomas Reynoldson & Son, Queen Street, Hull. We know that they were making items for Queen Victoria and have found a newspaper advert of theirs from 1850 which does not mention a royal warrant and also does not yet use the "& Son" moniker. So this must be later than 1850. The Prince of wales at that time was Edward (who became king in 1901) but anyway, its very obviously from around the 1860 type date. Its in a typical archaeological revival style popularised by Castellani and this piece bears a strong resemblance to a lot of his work but we're probably a bit late for him given the above so naturally one turns to Carlo Giuliano and perhaps Pasquale Novissimo who worked for him...But it has a maker's mark that we've been unable to attribute to anyone (see pics) which look like 3 H's inside a triangle - if anyone knows who this is, please let us know!
