Description: A fabulous ruby...if only it had come out of the ground! This one is a lab grown ruby (they've been making these since the late 19th century) if it were a natural one (which would be chemically identical to this one) you'd be looking at $1m+ stone). Lab grown diamonds are in the news of course and they are a lot cheaper than earth mined but the marketing people have managed to make sure people still attribute a value to them (for now! Read our blog post re this!). Synthetic sapphire and ruby has never really been given the same marketing treatment so they don't hold a huge amount of value. On the plus side, it is about as good a colour as you can get and it's an irregular shape having been hand cut and faceted so it's not just something that's been recently made and cut with a laser. And whoever made it was sufficiently proud to mount it in 22ct gold (which is where most of your money is going here - assuming 6.5g of 22ct, at ttime of writing there's over £550 just in scrap!)
Age: c early to mid 20th century but very hard to date precisely without a full hallmark.
