Description: Gorgeous enamelled pin modelled as a leaping salmon off to the spawning grounds (before collapsing and being eaten by something!) His face, lips and eye are so fun and really well modelled. He's by the well renowned Birmingham firm of Alabaster and Wilson, some more info about them here courtesy of wilson55 auctioneers:
"Alabaster & Wilson are renowned for their wonderfully crafted pieces, often featuring sporting motifs of racing, hunting and fishing. These realistically modelled pieces sell well at auction, particularly to collectors. Formed in 1887 by Arthur Alabaster and Thomas Wilson in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Alabaster & Wilson specialised in a wide range of diamond and gold jewellery for their discerning client base. Retailed by the likes of Boodle & Dunthorne, this family-owned jewellery firm epitomised high-end jewellery design.
Creating their pieces from a small but highly skilled team of goldsmiths, Alabaster & Wilson frequently made bespoke pieces for their discerning clients. Commissions included one-off pieces for the Royal Family, the British Racing Driver’s Club and several horse racing patrons. Wilson 55 sold a remarkable 9ct gold Alabaster & Wilson Liver Bird brooch, created for a Liverpool Mayoress at auction for £1,800. Retailed by Boodle & Dunthorne, the piece has subsequently been exhibited in the 'Pure Brilliance: The Boodles Story' exhibition between 2022-2023.
Equestrian themes feature heavily in Alabaster & Wilson's output, and continue to sell excellently at auction. Horse racing brooches are typical of Alabaster & Wilson’s finest work, with a piece made for Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday. Unfortunately, closing their doors in 2018, pieces by this wonderful British jewellery firm are quite rightly in high demand at auction."
