Description: Striking arts & crafts / Art Nouveau pendant which has a small top loop where a bail could be attached to wear as a pendant. As a rule, we don't put a designers name against arts and crafts pieces unless we are sure of the attribution. It is almost certainly by one of the pre-eminent makers of the time, possibly retailed by liberty of London - its certainly British rather than French Art Nouveau and is a rare gold piece - Birmingham school, Bernard Cuzner or Thomas Blackband are our best guesses at this point although the leaves are in the manner of Mary Thew - let us know what you think!

Age: c1905 Arts and Crafts

Size and weight: 3g. 3cm drop x 3.5cm wide.

Materials: Gold (exact fineness TBD), Opal

Condition: Very good. At first glance its easy to think that the main opal is damaged - it does have a slight hairline only visible under 10x magnification but the cloudy inclusions you can see are actually part of the rock matrix on which the opal is found (as can be seen when viewed from the reverse) so its always been this way and the designer/jeweller has chosen this stone warts and all which does fit the arts and crafts ethos. It looks a bit like those pictures you see that the Hubble or James Webb telescope has taken of some distant nebula! Anyway, you must make your mind up as to whether you find this appealing or distracting! Both opals totally magical in their own way!
