Description: A very striking and unusual hand carved, hand made brooch. The coral has been carved by a real master craftsman and it must have taken ages to do! Then a jeweller has made a bespoke silver frame and studded it with marcasites - its a great look and very unusual, you won't see another one anyway!
Age: c1930 Art Deco. Its conceivable that it could be a fair bit older or even Victorian but we feel on balance it has a strong Art Deco, flapper girl aesthetic and coral and marcasite was a popular combination at the time. Its certainly no more recent that 1920. Some Arts & Crafts artisans, eg Dorrie Nossiter also worked with carved coral like this. This isn't a Dorrie piece but you could argue and A&C influence here.
Size and weight: Its heavy for a brooch at nearly 43g so needs to go on a coat or something fairly weighty. 3 inches by 1.5 inches.
Materials: Sterling silver, Coral, Marcasite.
Condition: Very good. We've left the patination on the silver as once removed, its hard to get back! It would take a nice, light polish though.
