Description: This design, with the chunky, square claws holding a big juicy stone always look really modern and we don't know whether just one jeweller was making these or whether this style was just popular everywhere for a while - has a real space age, Dr Christopher Dresser feel! Really unusual to see an amethyst cut into a hexagon, would have been expensive to have that done. There's a loop on the reverse for either a safety chain or to attach a bail if you wished to wear as a pendant. Anyway its a crazy, modern looking brooch that is actually 150 years or so old!

Age: c1880 Victorian

Size and weight: 9.7g 2.8cm across

Materials:  Gold (awaiting X Ray testing for fineness, assume 9ct minimum for now) Large natural amethyst

Condition: Very good . The stone has some fairly large internal fractures, we don't know if these are natural inclusions or have occurred at a later date. They're not awfully distracting however, in the right light it creates a rainbow, petrol on water type effect.
