Description: Typically Victorian, very sweet and unusual cameo. Its only possible to use lava (probably from mount Etna) for these type of very deep, high relief carvings. Its a relatively soft and plentiful material which has been transformed by a skilled artisan some 170 or so years ago. The face of the cherub (he has little wings making him a cherub) is particularly nicely done.
Age: c1860 Victorian, possibly a little earlier
Size and weight: 36.9g so either a cabinet piece or to be (carefully) worn on a thick coat perhaps.
Materials: 15ct Gold, unmarked, volcanic lava, base metal pin, wool type fabric material to reverse.
Condition: Good considering its age - his head has been off at some point and has been honestly repaired (ie glued on) of course this isn't obvious when worn but when looking up close some clear glue is visible - please see pics. This could be restored but we tend to leave as we find. Let sleeping dogs lie as it were!
