Description: A rare survivor for someone who likes the best of the best! Antique? check. 18 carat? Check. Rare links? Check. Nice length? Check. Hallmarked on every link? Check.
Most 18 carat albert chains have ended up in the melting pot over the years simply because they are worth so much in gold alone so invariably they slip into the furnace! Ignoring silver and gold plate ones, of the antique gold Alberts that remain, probably 95% are 9 carat, 3% are 15 carat and about 2% are 18 carat. Then of those ones, probably 10% are in this style with twisted links. So this is a rare and wearable investment piece that is always going to have a lot of intrinsic value.
Age: c1900 Late Victorian
Size and weight: 54.5g. Hefty! 16 and 3/4 inches. Links are around 8mm wide.
Materials: 18ct Gold, each link and clasp identically marked.
Condition: Very good, sometimes, with higher carat chains especially, you can see where one link has eaten away a little where they meet, not the case here, it looks to have only been very lightly worn (and its been in our safe for 20+ years!) the round link that joins the chain to the clasp is the only one that's a tiny bit scruffy in this respect. The lobster claw dog clip is nice and springy. It has a nice antique patina which could be polished out to a shine. We wouldn't want to do this o please don't ask! Oh go on, if you must...
