Description: A fun and interesting pendant - If you're into antique jewellery, you may have heard of "Essex crystals" These were and are mis-named because William Essex, (a prominent royal animal portraitist patronised by Queen Victoria) somehow erroneously had these attributed to him and it has stuck like glue! Actual "Essex crystals" (reverse carved and painted 3D effect rock crystals) were mostly made in Belgium and they are confusingly usually called "English crystals" in parts of Europe today.
This one is a stunner and so full of character. A rock crystal cabochon has been created and then a skilled artisan has carved the dog into the reverse, its then painted (probably with a single hair) to give this amazing 3D effect. We love this type of jewellery because it just couldn't be made today.
We always get the dog breed wrong so please tell us what he is! Didn't something happen to French Bulldogs' ears? And they're curly now when they used to be straight!?
Age: c1860, Victorian
Size and weight: 2.6cm across, 3.3cm to top of bail. 9.4g gross.
Materials: Hand carved rock crystal quartz, high carat gold, mother of pearl, paint.
Condition: Excellent. These are often converted from stick pins but this one we believe has always been a pendant. Don't wear this guy in the bath or the shower! He's fairly robust and quartz is a hard material but you wouldn't want any water creeping inside.
